Aldi are ramping up their campaign to elbow their way onto your festive drinks shelf with a re-launch of their premium Classic Icons range of wines. And the list they’ve sent me does look pretty impressive, with some of the standout names being French ones beginning with “Ch”. Yep, that’s right, Chablis, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Champagne.
In my experience, Aldi generally do really well with premium whites but, for some reason, I usually find their reds less impressive. So I’ll be interested to try some of their new-season Bordeauxs from Margeaux and Pomerol, while the Barossa Shiraz and Californian Cab Sauvignon also sound like they could have real potential. How they are going to pull off a premium Chianti Classico for £6.49, though, remains to be seen.
As someone who likes to spend an annoyingly long time browsing wines on the shelf, it’s a shame that most of these will only be available online, but I guess that’s market forces for you. Here’s the full list of what’s in the Aldi Classic Icons range.
