Konichiwa! Welcome to The Wine Ninjas: a wine-flavoured online magazine, pouring out irreverent wine, food and travel features for those who want to know more about what’s in their glass.
I’m Gary Rose, a full-time (ex BBC) magazine journalist based in Brighton and London. I have over 15 years’ experience as a writer and chief sub-editor on some of the UK’s biggest print magazines, and I’m also the guardian of an unimpressive scroll certifying that I know a little bit about wine. Oh, and I’ve been studying the Japanese martial art of ninjutsu for the past 7 years, hence the ninja gimmick.
I’ve always loved wine, but it was only when I started writing travel features for Radio Times that my passion became fully ignited. Being lucky enough to taste wines in their country of origin, visit vineyards and speak to the producers took my appreciation to a new level. Whether it’s Napa Valley Chardonnay in Santa Monica, Chianti Classico in Florence, Romanian Merlot in “Dracula’s castle” or even local Sauvignon Blanc in Mumbai, each wine has a story to tell.
My Mission
So what’s the Wine Ninja philosophy? Well… I believe writing about wine, food and travel should be fun, personal and intimate — like chatting to a friend in a bar. Let’s face it, wine reviews can be dry exercises in box ticking. Where’s the poetry in that? Here, I’ll dig into the stories behind the wines; why I chose them; whom I met along the way; how a specific wine or food made me feel; and how these experiences have woven themselves into the tapestry of my life.
