Konichiwa! Welcome to the lair of the wine-and-travel ninjas. Stealthily we stalk the globe, uncorking new viticultural and culinary experiences before vanishing in a cloud of smoke. We would like to share our findings with you, if you are ready to receive them…
I’m Gary Rose, a full-time (ex BBC) magazine journalist with over 15 years’ experience as a writer and chief sub-editor on one of the UK’s biggest print magazines. I’m also the guardian of an unimpressive scroll certifying that I know a bit about wine.
During my travels I’ve made tortellini in Italy, picked spices in India and quaffed Romanian red at midnight in a Transylvanian castle… but my home is at a secret location in Brighton, on England’s south coast.
So what’s the Wine Ninja philosophy? Well… I believe reviewing wine, food and travel should be fun, personal and intimate — like chatting to a friend in a candlelit bar. Let’s face it, a lot of wine reviews are dry exercises in box ticking. Where’s the love? Where’s the poetry? Here, formulaic reviews are nudged aside in favour of colourful anecdotes and edgy angles. I’ll dig into the stories behind the wines; why I chose them; whom I met along the way; how a specific wine or dish made me feel; and how these experiences wove themselves into the tapestry of my life.
