Jackson Estate’s Vintage Widow Pinot Noir 2015 was awarded gold at this year’s presigious IWSC (International Wine and Spirit Competition) Awards, earning an impressive 95 points. And I thought I’d let you know that this wine is, at the time of writing, on offer at Waitrose-partnered website Ocado, reduced from £20.99 to £15.74.
Not content with snatching gold in the Pinot Noir Marlborough category, it also ran off with the overall Pinot Noir award, beating notable competition from France and Germany, as well as New Zealand.
Although made using traditional Old World techniques, this peerless Pinot hails from about as far away from France as you can get — the north-eastern tip of the New Zealand’s South Island, a region predominantly known for its ubiquitous, gooseberry-tinged Sauvignon Blancs.
Despite this geographical separation, the Vintage Widow’s flavours don’t stray far from its Burgundian counterparts. Smooth and medium bodied, it’s dominated by bright red fruits (strawberry and raspberry) along with black cherry, underscored by spicy notes and the smokey, earthy aromas that form the signature of the grape.
At the offer price especially, it certainly deserves…
